Namun, sejak aturan itu keluar, mereka tak lagi bisa melakukan hal sama secara bebas. Jika ingin tetap merayakan Imlek, mereka harus diam-diam melakukannya. Tentu, itu dilakukan tanpa diberi hari libur seperti sekarang.
Bahkan, kata ‘Imlek’ sendiri pun lahir dan diciptakan di masa Orde Baru sebagai bentuk penyesuaian tata bahasa. Sebab, di China, perayaan ini lazim disebut Sin Cia, diambil dari bahasa Mandarin yang saat Orde Baru dilarang. Atas dasar inilah, kata ‘Imlek’ hanya ada di Indonesia.
Selain itu di imlek, ruang gerak etnis Tionghoa cukup terbatas. Para seniman tak bisa menampilkan pentas seni berbau kebudayaan Tionghoa. Lalu, untuk sekedar keperluan administrasi kependudukan juga berlaku hal sama. Mereka harus melampirkan bukti yang menyatakan mereka benar-benar warga Indonesia.
Beruntung aturan diskriminasi tersebut berakhir saat Orde Baru runtuh. Di awal reformasi, Presiden B.J Habibie dan Presiden Abdurrahman Wahid mengeluarkan aturan yang mencabut seluruh aturan diskriminasi terhadap etnis Tionghoa yang dikeluarkan Soeharto.
